Tony Dean Smith’s first moments as a director are caught on video tape when as a 2 year old, he looks to his dad who stands behind the camera, and says, “zoooom.”
Born in the urban jungle of Johannesburg, South Africa, Tony moved to Vancouver, Canada at the age of 12 and continued to immerse himself in the world of film, TV and storytelling. After a childhood spent making short films, Tony’s teen years saw him plunge into the world of acting for theater and tv, with roles in ‘the x-files,’ ‘poltergeist: the legacy,’ and numerous theater productions.
At 19, with his interests turning towards human behavior, he retired his acting mask, lifted his pen and camera - and started to aim his vision towards making films that inspire, entertain, provoke and uplift the audience to see another layer of our co-existence - and our heroic journey towards having empathy towards each other.
In his past, Tony has garnered acclaim as an award-winning film editor for such films as ‘Quest,’ ‘Man Feel Pain,’ ‘Everyone’ and ‘Hiro,’ with jury prizes from the Toronto International Film Festival, SlamDance and many other festivals - as well as numerous award winning music videos and mows.
Tony’s personal mission is to create awareness through entertainment. Keenly aware that “we’ve been telling stories since our days in the caves,” he believes strongly that “film, like the early shamanic rituals around the fire, is one of the strongest tools to communicate ideas about who we are, why we are here and where we are going.”
Tony is currently developing various feature film projects that support this vision.
