Tony Dean Smith first fell in love with the camera at age 10, when he realized his love of drawing and mischief could be twisted and turned into a motion picture sequence. An award-winning film school graduate, Tony’s passion for the moving image brought him to the attention of the Director’s Guild of Canada, where he received a “kickstart” grant for what turned into his first 35mm short film, Reflection, which played in numerous festivals, taking home a first prize award and earning five Leo Award nominations (including best picture and director). His recent directing credits include the dark-noir short, Shiva; the comedy series Health Nutz; three episodes of CTV’s comedy series, Robson Arms and co-directing the award-winning feature film, Summerhood. As a screenwriter, he is the recipient of the Super Channel Super Catalyst Screenwriting Award for The Sensational, a fantasy/adventure screenplay that he co-wrote with his writing partner and brother, Ryan W. Smith. Tony has a number of other projects in active development, including a single-camera comedy series with Paperny Films, a sci-fi comedy feature - and an action/adventure film. In his past, Tony has also garnered acclaim as an award-winning film editor, with jury prizes from TIFF and many other festivals. He currently sits on the Vancouver Film School Acting Department’s Advisory Board and continues to teach and inspire students, as time allows. He is represented as a writer/director by Carmen Bonnici at Pacific Artists Management.
